Thank you Ports Australia for introducing our Port Manager – Lindsay Whiting
What are the diverse tasks of a port manager in Australia’s far northern Port Melville, off the coast of Darwin? Meet Lindsay …
Start and finish: 6am – 6pm Main tasks: Oversee all daily operations and ensure a safe, efficient, productive and client-focused working environment
First job on shift: Run through pre-starts with the entire team and provide the opportunity for the team to discuss concerns and improvements for the day’s safe operational requirements.
Certifications: I have several certificates and licences that gave me my initial start, but on-the-job is the best training anyone can have.
Hardest part of the job: Time management!! There just isn’t enough time in a day.
Favourite part of the job: The ocean! I’m not fussed about anything I do when I am on or near the water. I grew up in the local community of Pirlangimpi and a goal of mine is to build up our locally-based work force. For e.g., working with my senior management we have identified two candidates as general purpose hands on the tugs. I hope to provide more stepping stones and guidance for other young people to enter the industry.
